This exquisite handmade porcelain vase is exactly the vessel we've been searching for. The mouth is the perfect size for a bunch of stems (wide enough to fit many without being so wide that they all go sidewise), it is substantially weighty enough not to topple over with heavier blossoms, and, at 10" it's quite possibly the perfect thing for those sculptural branches we're so fond of bringing in from outside.
Seriously durable and designed for everyday use, these pieces are half glazed-the interior is finished with an extremely hard, high gloss, clear glaze and the outside is left raw-fired to show off the clay's unique texture. That almost luminous soft white color? That's the all-natural hue of the porcelain itself.
About John Julian: Hand thrown, fettled (a word we love-it's when a piece of porcelain is smooth finished by hand using a knife and a sponge before going into the kiln), glazed, and fired at exceptionally high temperatures, John Julian's simple, beautiful porcelain is lovingly made to last in a small workshop in Wiltshire, England. Designed by artist + sculptor Julian Sainsbury, these silhouettes recall the classic elegant-workmanlike shapes that have been gracing English kitchens and tables for hundreds of years. Contrary to popular belief, porcelain is not fussy. Go ahead and put it in the dishwasher. Rejoice!
