Every Friday The Foundry Home Goods donates 5% of our total sales to a different community-nominated small-and-mighty cause. This Friday's Foundry Giving Friday recipient? Rebellion Relief Fund!
Rebellion Relief Fund is a Minneapolis-based Mutual Aid organization focused specifically on connecting Black and Brown mothers, caregivers, and their children with crucial supplies and targeted support.
Put simply, Mutual Aid is community-led support of community. Powered by the people, for the people, Mutual Aid is a means of offering a sort of lateral solidarity outside the limitations of plagued and/or paternalistic systems. Founded by holistic healer Zedé Harut, Rebellion Relief Fund became a resource for the Black and Brown community within the Twin Cities area shortly after the murder of George Floyd. Where protests (and accompanying violent state-sanctioned backlash) were and are occurring is largely residential—there are dense populations of Black and Brown families, mothers, caregivers and children, living through the uprising without safe access to bare essentials.
In the immediate aftermath, Rebellion Relief Fund gathered residents in the community to come together and volunteer to pick up and drop off food and items to the mothers that had no transportation to the donation sites and stores, take them to the pharmacy for prescription pickup, and more. Then, as resources became more inaccessible for these families, and COVID-19 and state curfews made things more restricted, they started their Mutual Aid fund to channel any additional relief exactly where it needs to go.
Now we are here. Until systems are dismantled and retooled to truly serve us all, this is a simple, clear-cut way to ensure that mothers and their children are connected with the tools and resources they need to survive. Happy Mother's Day!
