Every Friday The Foundry Home Goods donates 5% of our total sales to a different community-nominated small-and-mighty cause. This Friday's Foundry Giving Friday recipient? Urban Roots!
Urban Roots is a longstanding St. Paul-based non-profit whose mission is to cultivate and empower youth through nature, healthy food, and community via their revolutionary paid internship programs. Each year, 60 young people from Saint Paul's East Side are employed in three program areas: Market Garden (growing, harvesting, and managing a CSA etc), Conservation (maintaining green spaces and public land management etc), and Cook Fresh (seed-to-table and commercial cooking skills etc). These internships provide youth with 8-24 hours/week of paid job experience and training during peak-season summer harvest months, and during the school year, youth meet twice a week after school and are often involved in events on the weekends. This progressive compensated (!) program model engages youth in career exploration, entrepreneurial ventures, 21st Century job skills, healthy living, community engagement, self-discovery, while also putting a value on their time and expertise.
Like all things, this wild season has made it both more complex to execute these crucial programs and also highlighted the deep necessity for this exact thing: expanding equitable access to green spaces, healthy food, community support, and the opportunity to grow and expand the interconnectedness of all. See more of their excellent work here @urbanrootsmn.
