Every Friday The Foundry Home Goods contributes 5% of our total sales to a different community-nominated small-and-mighty cause. This Friday's Foundry Giving Friday recipient? The Lift Garage!
The Lift Garage is a Minneapolis based non-profit that aims to move people out of poverty and homelessness by providing low-cost car repair, free pre-purchase car inspections, and honest advice that supports the community on the road to more secure lives.
Working with people experiencing homelessness, longtime social worker Cathy Heying repeatedly saw how devastating the prohibitive cost of commercial car repair could be. In a domino effect, people who couldn’t afford to get their cars fixed couldn’t get to work and so lost their jobs. Without jobs, they lacked the money to pay for housing and ended up in shelter.
So OF COURSE, Cathy went back to school to become an AUTO TECHNICIAN. Yes, Cathy! Just seeing a problem and grabbing it by the lugbolts! In April 2013, with board members, donors, and volunteers to back her, The Lift opened for one day a week with one repair bay and one volunteer mechanic. Since opening their doors, support from the community has made it possible to greatly expand the services they provide. In 2018 they moved to our current location and now have 5 repair bays and employ 5 full-time auto technicians.
If you don't need anything from us, please consider investing directly in The Lift Garage here. If you do find yourself in search of your own hot wheels (or tools to fix them in the event of a tiny/imaginary flat tire) know that your purchase goes to support good change happening on the community level.
Thanks to Susan G. for the nomination!
