Field-tested in the wild heathers and bounding, blustery expanses of wild Scottish moorlands for thousands of years, traditional highland plaids are as iconic as they are snuggly functional and cozily indestructible. Based in Edinburgh and led by supremely charming and exceptionally Scottish Wife and Husband duo Emma and Fergus Macdonald, their three young kiddoes, and their team of tackswomen, The Tartan Blanket Co. is reimagining the classic tartan plaids of bygone days for the modern era. A Positive Impact Company, sustainable, ethical production methods are at the forefront: their "recycled wool" blankets are designed in Scotland, woven from an ingenious mixture of yarn rescued from pre-loved wool garments and long-staple fibers made from plastic waste, and hand-finished by a women-led fair-wage collective in India. The resulting heirloom-caliber blankets are lighter-than-air, cozier than a peat fire, and (gasp!) machine washable. 57" x 75", a very generous throw or we also love using it as an additional layer at the foot of smaller beds (especially ideal if one bed-partner sleeps hot and the other cold).
Take Care: While these rare woolens are suitable for the machine, less washing prolongs the lifespan of the material and is better for the planet. Spot treating and airing your blanket out in a breezy spot will cure most ills. If you do need to wash: delicate, no hotter than 80 degrees, avoid spin cycles, and hang to dry, and Salinte mhath!
