Do you love your wooden spoon? This humble fine-grained hardwood spatula might be your new main squeeze. Hand-turned and carved on holy Miyajima Island, where wood from Japanese Mulberry trees, called Shimakuwa ("island wood"), has long been celebrated for its beauty, strength, and gorgeous grain. Mulberry craftsmen from the island have a centuries-old history going back to making these same types of objects for emperors. This sweet, simple blunt ended spatula is naturally hydrophobic and pleasingly smooth to the touch so this stays cleaner and fresher than your standard old spoon while the slender, slightly "sharp" flat edge make it our go-to for everything from sweating mirepoix or deglazing the pan to executing perfect scrambled eggs. It's also friendly with non-stick pans and all clads. Put a little loop through the hole in the handle and keep it close at hand in the kitchen. 8".
Take Care: Occasionally oil the wood with your preferred food safe wood conditioner (we swear by Old Mill's All Natural Beeswax and Mineral Oil Wood Polish, available right here at The Foundry), being sure to allow enough time for the wood to absorb the oil before its next use.
Lillian owns + loves these things!
Love the whole mulberry line but this one is so special. Nice to do a little light scraping on the bottom of a pan or sneak in and flip frying eggs. Super lightweight!
